Okay friends & family whether you are a participant in GO FAR or not I would like your help on this project because this is something that applies to us all and that is; creating a healthy & happy 2014! I am working on a resolution wall to be able to display to our participants in the upcoming season. One of the main elements of GO FAR is the concept of GOALS! Goals are what drive us and give us reason. Goals set our course for the quest of discovering more about who we are, what we can accomplish, and what we "stride <run>" for. Please take the time to reflect on what your goals are for 2014 and share a resolution with us (GO FAR) that will help continue your path to a healthier and happier you! It can be a simple statement or an enlightening story. These resolutions will help give inspiration and motivation to our participants by displaying that everyone has something worth achieving and that everyone is worth that achievement! I would really like to hear as many resolutions as possible, so please post and share. I will be printing highlights of this resolution project on a bulletin board and I will be creating a digital slideshow with everyone's posts  Thank you for your support to OBX GO FAR and thank you for helping create a healthier and happier 2014!!

The Goal of a Child Can Change the World

Tomorrow is the 1st day in the Fall 2013 GO FAR Season (Sept. 16th). One brave 4th grader has already shared his goal for the season. Help him embark on the journey by joining the campaign! How many of you are willing to make the same goal to help support Damien and to help you GO FAR in your life?

Read the story below and then read further to find out how to make this your goal. (you do not have to be a GO FAR participant to make this your goal, if you believe and support our cause and strive for a better tomorrow, then this is for you too )

The Goal of a Child Can Change the World
As we travel along from day to day in this world of ours, we may sometimes feel as if our actions don’t contribute to the outcome of the day, like our voice isn’t being heard, or as if we have no control over the big picture. Damien Gregory is lacing up and setting out to prove otherwise this GO FAR season. His voice is being heard as we are revving up for this Fall season and he is determined to prove that his actions do control the outcome of the day. This inspirational story is a reminder to all that each individual voice does matter, every action we make is seen, heard, and felt; each one of us contributes to the big picture and the grand scheme of life. As a wise man once said; “Be the change you wish to see in the world” (Gandhi). To make change, live by example. In GO FAR each one of our hard-working volunteers is a shining model of living by example.
Damien is a 4th grader that has been with OBX GO FAR practically since it began 4 years ago. He told his mom to train for the 5k and throughout the GO FAR season his goal is to cut out fast food and to eat very healthy so his body is fueled properly for the 5k. Damien knows it will be hard to ride by hamburger alley and resist the temptation of the luscious foods crashing into the senses like a wave. However, growth often requires challenge and he is willing to take that on. He is motivated by his drive to tackle another 5k and add to his collection of GO FAR medals. To most a GO FAR medal is not a trinket or an award, but an admirable plate of armor that displays personal achievement.
Damien’s GO FAR spirit, dedication to create positive change and to lead by example is what this program is all about. The goal of GO FAR is to inspire each child to believe in their self-worth; to believe their voice and actions do matter. A voice or action propelled by determination and courage can be heard around the world and back. One voice turns to 10, 10 turns to 100, 100 to 1,000, 1,000 to 10,000 footprints trailing along. GO FAR was once a small community program in Highpoint, NC that is now across several states and reaching around 10,000 children. Voices like Damien’s and the actions of our enthusiastic volunteers are what keeps GO FAR running forward!

How to support this goal:
1. Send words of encouragement: Comment on this post or post a comment on our Facebook at www.facebook.com/ObxGoFar or send us an email obxgofar@gmail.com
2. Make this your goal: Follow the same info above to let us know if you are willing to give-up fast food over the next 8 weeks and make or purchase healthy meals. Log what you eat (this only works if you're honest) and share it with us on the above contact info.

OBX GO FAR

 Fall 2013
Lace up your sneakers and get ready to GO FAR.
OBX GO FAR is coming to a school near you fall 2013

What is it?

It is a non-profit program (501 c3) that participates in the national cause of taking steps to prevent childhood obesity.

GO FAR is devoted to the youth of the community and strives to equip them with the ideal resources that will empower them through healthy living.

GO FAR operates in all elementary and middle Dare County Schools for a fall season and a spring season.

Participants meet twice a week for 1.5 hours following school to train for the race program they are enrolled in (FUN RUN or 5k). In the program participants learn the core values of fitness, nutrition, and character skills. What is the difference between the FUN RUN and 5k? The fun run program trains for a 1 mile race and is in session for 6 weeks. The 5k trains for the 5k race (3.2 miles) and meets for 8 weeks. The 5k is for 8 year olds and above or experienced GO FAR participants. Both programs operate on the same schedule at the school, but the FUN RUN program starts two weeks later.

Pricing: The 5k program is $40.00; this includes: the 8 week program, snack, race registration, T-Shirt, and a Race Medal. The FUN RUN (1 mile) Program is $35.00 to include the 6 weeks of practice sessions, snack, race registration, T-Shirt, and a race medal. Households in need may qualify for a scholarship to enroll in the program.

When? The Fall season will operate from Sept. 16th for 5k and Sept. 30 for FUN RUN to November 9th.

Why is this Important?

·         Childhood Obesity is a national epidemic that endangers the health of our youth.

·         GO FAR offers a healthy outlet that invests in each individual and motivates them to reach their potential.

·         It is a non-profit organization that is a valuable resource to bringing the community together in a healthy, enriching, and inspiring setting.

The Value of Volunteers

Our volunteers are our gold!
Our program is a non-profit and is very thankful to have dedicated volunteers that help our program happen. Without volunteers we would not be able to enrich the lives of the youth in our community. The number of volunteers we are able to have available at each school determines how many participants we are able to accept into the program. It is required to have at least 11 volunteer per 15 participants. We also must have at least 2 volunteers with each group. Each school ideally has a head volunteer for the FUN RUN program and one for the 5k program. To operate securely and productively each school needs approximately 4-6 volunteers. Registration is monitored and determined based on how many volunteers we have available for each school. Therefore, the more volunteers we have, the more youth we are able to reach. To learn how to get involved please see our websites or email obxgofar@gmail.com. You do not have to be an experienced runner to volunteer. We have a number of opportunities for volunteers to best fit your needs and experiences; head volunteer, group leaders, or group assistants.
Click on Volunteers Needed to the right for more info.

BUNNY HOP 5K & Jelly Bean FUN RUN - a COLORED filled event

Follow this Event on Facebook : HERE

23 days until we run the Bunny Trail!!
WE ARE GOING TO COLOR MORE THAN EASTER EGGS FOR THE BUNNY HOP 5K!  WE ARE TURNING THIS EVENT INTO A COLOR-FILLED AND SPARKLING RUN!

Easter is a time of celebration; what better way to GO FAR than coloring ourselves to sparkle!!
WHAT THAT MEANS TO YOU...
We will have celebration powder at the start of this run, on the course and finish.  The celebration powder and sparkle are all food based:  colored cornstarch and edible glitter.

Important Notes:
o         Our shirts will be in white to catch all the fun colors!
o           It does mostly wash out (Better to do so Sooner than Later)

o          Want to still strut your color and bunny hop pride; spray the shirt with vinegar and iron it.

o         Good idea to wear items you do not mind if the color sticks around. Especially, beware of this with your shoes.

o          Protect your eyes or glasses with sunglasses if you   choose.

o           There is a cleaning station after the finish line to help blow dry you clean, but if you still want to strut your bunny hop pride or have a little hidden color, bring towels for your car!!

o          You are given color packets at packet pick-up; that you throw in the air at the opening ceremony.

o          There are color stations along the way. Color is not thrown at you; it is a colorful cloud in the air that you run through.

HE WHO LOOKS MOST LIKE AN EASTER EGG AT THE FINISH WINS!!!!

Our trophies will be for the Most Colorful Male and Female and boy and girl at the finish!!!

Color not your thing; you just want to run?
There will be a 1st wave for those who want to run without color and for time. We are not tracking time, but the race clock is set-up for you to view. We cannot guarantee a complete retreat from color as there may be trails left from those who chose this option. You will be identified to be color-free by a sticker on your race bib.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email OBXGOFAR@gmail.com.
We look forward to hopping down the bunny trail with you as our colors sparkle with our GO FAR spirit!!
