The Goal of a Child Can Change the World

Tomorrow is the 1st day in the Fall 2013 GO FAR Season (Sept. 16th). One brave 4th grader has already shared his goal for the season. Help him embark on the journey by joining the campaign! How many of you are willing to make the same goal to help support Damien and to help you GO FAR in your life?

Read the story below and then read further to find out how to make this your goal. (you do not have to be a GO FAR participant to make this your goal, if you believe and support our cause and strive for a better tomorrow, then this is for you too )

The Goal of a Child Can Change the World
As we travel along from day to day in this world of ours, we may sometimes feel as if our actions don’t contribute to the outcome of the day, like our voice isn’t being heard, or as if we have no control over the big picture. Damien Gregory is lacing up and setting out to prove otherwise this GO FAR season. His voice is being heard as we are revving up for this Fall season and he is determined to prove that his actions do control the outcome of the day. This inspirational story is a reminder to all that each individual voice does matter, every action we make is seen, heard, and felt; each one of us contributes to the big picture and the grand scheme of life. As a wise man once said; “Be the change you wish to see in the world” (Gandhi). To make change, live by example. In GO FAR each one of our hard-working volunteers is a shining model of living by example.
Damien is a 4th grader that has been with OBX GO FAR practically since it began 4 years ago. He told his mom to train for the 5k and throughout the GO FAR season his goal is to cut out fast food and to eat very healthy so his body is fueled properly for the 5k. Damien knows it will be hard to ride by hamburger alley and resist the temptation of the luscious foods crashing into the senses like a wave. However, growth often requires challenge and he is willing to take that on. He is motivated by his drive to tackle another 5k and add to his collection of GO FAR medals. To most a GO FAR medal is not a trinket or an award, but an admirable plate of armor that displays personal achievement.
Damien’s GO FAR spirit, dedication to create positive change and to lead by example is what this program is all about. The goal of GO FAR is to inspire each child to believe in their self-worth; to believe their voice and actions do matter. A voice or action propelled by determination and courage can be heard around the world and back. One voice turns to 10, 10 turns to 100, 100 to 1,000, 1,000 to 10,000 footprints trailing along. GO FAR was once a small community program in Highpoint, NC that is now across several states and reaching around 10,000 children. Voices like Damien’s and the actions of our enthusiastic volunteers are what keeps GO FAR running forward!

How to support this goal:
1. Send words of encouragement: Comment on this post or post a comment on our Facebook at www.facebook.com/ObxGoFar or send us an email obxgofar@gmail.com
2. Make this your goal: Follow the same info above to let us know if you are willing to give-up fast food over the next 8 weeks and make or purchase healthy meals. Log what you eat (this only works if you're honest) and share it with us on the above contact info.
