OBX GO FAR

 Fall 2013
Lace up your sneakers and get ready to GO FAR.
OBX GO FAR is coming to a school near you fall 2013

What is it?

It is a non-profit program (501 c3) that participates in the national cause of taking steps to prevent childhood obesity.

GO FAR is devoted to the youth of the community and strives to equip them with the ideal resources that will empower them through healthy living.

GO FAR operates in all elementary and middle Dare County Schools for a fall season and a spring season.

Participants meet twice a week for 1.5 hours following school to train for the race program they are enrolled in (FUN RUN or 5k). In the program participants learn the core values of fitness, nutrition, and character skills. What is the difference between the FUN RUN and 5k? The fun run program trains for a 1 mile race and is in session for 6 weeks. The 5k trains for the 5k race (3.2 miles) and meets for 8 weeks. The 5k is for 8 year olds and above or experienced GO FAR participants. Both programs operate on the same schedule at the school, but the FUN RUN program starts two weeks later.

Pricing: The 5k program is $40.00; this includes: the 8 week program, snack, race registration, T-Shirt, and a Race Medal. The FUN RUN (1 mile) Program is $35.00 to include the 6 weeks of practice sessions, snack, race registration, T-Shirt, and a race medal. Households in need may qualify for a scholarship to enroll in the program.

When? The Fall season will operate from Sept. 16th for 5k and Sept. 30 for FUN RUN to November 9th.

Why is this Important?

·         Childhood Obesity is a national epidemic that endangers the health of our youth.

·         GO FAR offers a healthy outlet that invests in each individual and motivates them to reach their potential.

·         It is a non-profit organization that is a valuable resource to bringing the community together in a healthy, enriching, and inspiring setting.

The Value of Volunteers

Our volunteers are our gold!
Our program is a non-profit and is very thankful to have dedicated volunteers that help our program happen. Without volunteers we would not be able to enrich the lives of the youth in our community. The number of volunteers we are able to have available at each school determines how many participants we are able to accept into the program. It is required to have at least 11 volunteer per 15 participants. We also must have at least 2 volunteers with each group. Each school ideally has a head volunteer for the FUN RUN program and one for the 5k program. To operate securely and productively each school needs approximately 4-6 volunteers. Registration is monitored and determined based on how many volunteers we have available for each school. Therefore, the more volunteers we have, the more youth we are able to reach. To learn how to get involved please see our websites or email obxgofar@gmail.com. You do not have to be an experienced runner to volunteer. We have a number of opportunities for volunteers to best fit your needs and experiences; head volunteer, group leaders, or group assistants.
